Cottagers and Indians

NOW CLOSED: Ran Aug 8 – Aug 30, 2025

An Indigenous man, Arthur Copper, has taken it upon himself to repopulate the nearby lakes with wild rice, known amongst the Anishinaabe as Manoomin. The seeds bloom into a funny-yet-fiery exchange between the farmer and a cottage owner, Maureen Poole. Told with warmth and humour, and encompassing issues of community, respect and ownership, COTTAGERS AND INDIANS is a tale for our times.

The structure is unique, and the execution is flawlesshilarious, insightful, and absolutely not to be missed. – Aiden Robert Bruce, Kingston Theatre Alliance

I really loved Cottagers and Indians! It was poignant, instructive, and deftly humorous. – A.M.

“A theatre lover’s dream to watch Jeremy Proulx and Jane Wheeler spar.” – Joe Szekeres, Our Theatre Voice

This is a shining jewel of a production with all creatives involved doing excellent work. I loved the set, the sound design, the unencumbered direction by the talented Kevin John Atawakon Saylor and the great performances. Another winner from the 1000 Islands Playhouse. – Craig Thornton, WWNY

Cottagers and Indians is a bracing, funny play about tradition, ownership, respect, privilege and entitlement and who is on what side of the argument is part of the challenge of the play. – Lynn Slotkin, The Slotkin Letter
