Romeo and Juliet- Havana 1958 is presented for one show only on Sunday February 16 at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque, 185 South Street. 2:30 in the afternoon.
Riverbank Productions, a Gananoque based theatre company who produced THE FANTASTICKS at Christmas in 2008, is excited to be presenting Shakespeare’s classic love story ROMEO AND JULIET. This is the second show of our winter playreading series, and in keeping with the romantic theme, it is being performed on the Valentine’s Day /Family Day weekend.
The story is set in Havana, Cuba, in 1958, just before the revolution. Juliet’s family is Mafia, Romeo’s revolutionaries, and the country is run by the corrupt dictator Batista and his gang of thieves. A great setting for the conflict that drives the story which ultimately, of course, ends in tragedy.
The company is a mix of professional and community theatre personnel, with professional directors Diane Stapley and Mo Bock at the helm. The directors have made liberal cuts in the text to bring the performing time down to something more reasonable than the original version, and there is no profanity in the show so you can safely bring your kids or your great grandma! And there will be music!
All of Riverbank’s shows this winter are benefits for the P.O.P program , a funding body run by the town to allow all families in Gan to enrol their children in recreational activities no matter what their financial circumstances may be. Our Christmas show raised nearly $600 for P.O.P.!
Tickets are $10 at the door, with a Family rate of $25, Student and Senior rate of $5. There will be a 50/50 draw, door prizes and Linda’s Travel , one of our sponsors, will be in the lobby with info on enticing tropical vacation specials which we are sure will be appealing to everyone THIS winter!
